IMPORTANT LEGISLATION

Weapons At School

State legislation requires that each school provide parents with notification of the schoolís code of behavior and discipline policy. Please read the policies carefully and go over them with your children. It is especially important to note the following:

Visitors to the School

Except on occasions such as school programs, open house, and similar public events, all visitors will report to the school office when entering the school, sign a log book, and receive a visitorís badge. Authorization to visit elsewhere in the building or on the school campus will be determined by the principal or designee.

In order to maintain the conditions and atmosphere suitable for learning, no other person shall enter onto the grounds or in the school building during the hours of student instruction except students assigned to the school, the staff of the school, parents of students, and other persons with lawful and valid business on the school premises.

The principal or designee has the authority to exclude from the school premises any persons disrupting the educational programs in the classroom or in the school, disturbing the teachers or students on the premises, or on the premises for the purpose of committing an illegal act. The principal shall engage law enforcement officials when the situation warrants such measures. Legal Reference: (Student and Employee Safe Environment Act of 1996)

Use of Personal Communication Devices in School

Students under the age of eighteen (18) shall not possess personal communication devices such as pagers and cellular phones while on school property or while attending a school-sponsored activity.

A ìpersonal communication deviceî is a device that emits an audible signal, vibrates, displays a message, or otherwise summons or delivers a communication to the possessor.

A person who discovers a student in possession of a personal communication device shall report the violation to the principal. The device will be confiscated.

Students who possess a personal communication device are in violation of this policy and school rules and are subject to the related disciplinary action.

Concerns/Complaints, and Grievances

Decisions made by school personnel which students believe are unfair or in violation of pertinent policies of the Board or individual school rules may be appealed to the school principal or a designated representative. To appeal, students will contact the principalís office in their school and provide their name, the issue, and the reason for their appeal in writing at the school office within 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays). If the principal does not make a decision within two school days following the date of the written complaint, students/parents may appeal at that time by contacting the Director or designee at the central office.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is a key factor in student achievement; therefore, students are expected to be present each day school is in session and arrive on time. The parents or guardians of elementary students are expected to assume responsibility for the studentís school attendance.

Tardiness

We trust that parents/guardians will assume the important responsibility of having children at school by 7:45. Coming to school late causes a childís school day to begin with a less than advantageous start. Tardiness causes students to feel left out of what the other students are doing and awkward in trying to get caught up. Students will be dismissed to the classrooms at 7:45 in order to unpack and prepare for the day. The designated school day will begin at 7:55.

Any student who is not in class and accounted for by 7:55 will be considered tardy. If your child is tardy, it will be necessary for the parent/guardian to accompany the child to the office to be signed in for verification in counting him/her present for the remainder of the day.

The student must be issued a tardy slip to be taken to the teacher.

Teachers will not permit tardy students into class without a tardy slip from the office.

Habitual tardiness takes away from valuable class time. To be fair to all students, a teacher is unable to interrupt class time in order to help each child who is tardy get caught up with the rest of the students in class.

Students who have 4 tardiness events or absences are subject to attending an after-school session (2:55-3:55) to make up valuable class time. Prior notification will be sent to parents (one day in advance) for scheduling purposes and for parents to arrange transportation. Hopefully, all parents will be able to assume responsibility in getting students to school on time.

Absences

We ask that parents notify the school office as early as possible on any given day that a student will be absent.

Absences shall be classified as either excused or unexcused as determined by the principal or designee. In order to receive an excused absence, the parent/guardian must provide the school with a written explanation of the childís absence within 3 days of the absence. After 3 days, the absence will become permanently unexcused. The note must include: the date of absence, reason for absence, a telephone number for verification, and the parentís/guardianís signature.

Excused Absences shall include:

1. Medical Absences (Documentation from doctor, dentist, or health care is needed.) Whenever possible, appointments should be made after school.)

2. Personal Absences

*Personal Illness - After three parent notes, a doctorís documentation will be necessary.

*Serious illness of an immediate family member

*Appearance in court-A personal subpoena will be required as documentation.

*Death in the family-1 day will be excused. Additional days will be excused at the discretion of the principal (program or death notice is required upon return to school.)

*Extreme weather conditions

*Pre-authorized religious retreat

*Extenuating circumstances which in the judgment of the principal create situations or emergencies over which the student has no control

*Attendance of special events/trips must be approved in advance by the principal in order for the absence to be excused. Teachers do not have the authority to excuse absences. (See the office personnel for a required request for absence form.) *Documentation may be required.

All other absences are unexcused.

Makeñup Work

An excused absence allows the student the right to have an opportunity to make up work missed. All make-up work and tests should be completed immediately upon returning to school. A student who misses school on a specific day and returns the next day may be held responsible for meeting the obligations of the class upon returning to school unless excused by the teacher. Students who are absent should obtain assignments for the next day.

As a convenience for parents and to prevent classroom interruptions, assignments for each day will be submitted to the office by 12:00 each day. An assignment sheet for make-up work and all related materials will be ready for parents to pick up by 12:00. We ask that parents make a concerted effort to obtain assignments for make-up work each day a student is absent in order to help the student feel more comfortable upon returning to class and without the overwhelming burden of missing out on important skills/lessons with an abundance of assignments to be made up.

Check-out Policy

No student will leave school prior to the regular dismissal hours except with the approval of the principal and the parent. Telephone requests for early dismissal of a student shall be honored only if the caller can be positively identified as the studentís parent or guardian. Students will be permitted to leave school prior to regular dismissal time only in the company of the parent, legal guardian, or a person designated in writing by the parent or guardian who provides positive identification and signs the student out through the office Students are not allowed to leave the classroom with out authorization from the office. If a parent is visiting in the building and wishes to check his/her child out before regular dismissal time, the parent must follow appropriate procedures for checking out a student.

Only parents and legal guardians may authorize a student to leave school. Teachers are not to release a student from a classroom until notified by the office . The parent/guardian must verify information and sign the log book before a student will be released to come to the office to be checked out. In the event of questionable legal custody, school officials reserve the right to require proof of custody before releasing a student.

If someone other than a parent/guardian checks a student out, he/she must present a note from the parent.

The note must have the following information:

1. Date and time for student to be checked out

2. Name of person who has been given permission to check out the student

3. Phone number where parent may be reached for verification

4. Reason for check-out

5. Parentís signature

School officials will check the validity of any questionable note. Any such note which cannot be verified will not be accepted and permission to check a student out will be denied.

Students returning to school on the same day must be ACCOMPANIED BY THE PARENT/GUARDIAN and signed back in through the office. For the safety of your child, please do not send students into the school building unaccompanied. Students checking in during the school day must be issued an admittance slip to be given to the teacher upon returning to the classroom.

THE BUILDING OPENS AT 7:00 a.m. EACH MORNING. FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD, DO NOT LEAVE HIM/HER OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING UNATTENDED BEFORE 7:00!

Students enter the building through the gym doors. When dropping students off in the morning, DO NOT park or leave your car unattended in the car rider lane. If you must take time to prepare your child to unload from the car, park in the designated parking area until you are ready to let your child out of the car. Cars will be directed to pull as far forward as possible in order to accommodate multiple unloading. DO NOT make a second lane of traffic and have your child walk across a lane of traffic. Only one lane of traffic will be used for dropping off children.

After 7:45- If your child has not been dropped off at the gym entrance by 7:45, it will be necessary to take your child to the front entrance. Afternoon Pick Up Procedures

Car riders will be dismissed from classrooms at 3:00 to go to the gym for dismissal from the building. The car rider lane of traffic will begin moving at approximately 3:05. In order to keep the car rider lane from backing up, please do not arrive to pick students up until 3:05. For the safety of our students, we use only one lane for picking up the children. Parents in the car rider lane should be respectful of the line of cars behind. When picking up car riders, please drive as far down the sidewalk as possible before stopping in order to prevent the end of the line from being backed up on the highway. Please keep close to the sidewalk so that cars may pull around. If it is necessary that you leave your car, please park in the parking lot instead of holding up the car line.

In order to ensure the safety of your children, each family will be issued a car rider number to be used during the afternoon car rider pickup. Please attach the number to the right sunvisor (in the down position) in your vehicle. All students will be safely supervised and will be called to the pick up area when his/her number has been identified.

If more than one person is authorized to pick up your child, please make another car rider number card to be used for each vehicle.

Students who have not been picked up by 3:20 p.m . will be in the cafeteria for safety and supervision purposes. It will be necessary for parents to come into the building through the front entrance and sign their child out in order to verify the identity of persons picking up students after regular dismissal time.

Altering Pickup Routine

For your childís sense of well-being and to alleviate confusion, if it is necessary to alter your childís pick-up schedule, please discuss that with your child before he/she comes to school on that day and send notification to the school in writing. Interrupting valuable class time delivering messages must be kept to a minimum, and the possibility of miscommunication especially during the busy time before dismissal makes last minute changes in your childís schedule undesirable. On occasion, unforeseen complications may arise during the school day. We certainly understand those situations, and will help you in any way possible.

We have developed a discipline program which seeks to reward appropriate behavior and correct inappropriate behavior. The expectations for classroom and school-wide conduct are clearly established and explained to students. Student conduct is documented and parents will be notified of violations of school rules.

A student shall not use violence, force, noise, coercion, threat, intimidation, fear, passive resistance or any other conduct which causes the disruption, interference or obstruction of any school purpose while on school property, in school vehicles or buses, or at any school-sponsored activity, function or event, whether on or off campus. The authority shall extend to all activities of the school including trips and all other activities under school sponsorship and direction. Such measures may include the reasonable force to restrain or correct students and maintain order.

Parents: Please speak to your children about your expectations of their behavior and performance at school. We will work with students and parents to help students develop self-discipline, but we will not allow a disruptive student to interfere with the learning of other students. Students who deviate from acceptable behavior should expect to be disciplined.

*Remember: Common sense and good judgment are the greatest factors in guiding behavior.

Students are expected to exhibit self-discipline and behave in a manner that is in the best interest of the student and the school. Varied levels of corrective measures will be used appropriately, depending on the levels of severity of a behavioral offense.

Refer to the Marshall County Schools Student Code of Conduct Policy.

Students will be expected to exhibit the very highest and unquestionable standard of conduct and courtesy at all times. The following virtues are essential in order to meet the expectations of the school system and will be emphasized throughout the year.

HEALTH INFORMATION

Medication Procedures

We prefer NOT to give any medication during the day. However, at times certain individuals are required to take medication during the school hours. If this situation should arise, the medication must be brought to the school office in the ORIGINAL CONTAINER along with a medical form (prescription medication or over the counter medication) to be filed. Necessary forms may be obtained through the office.

Inhalers may be kept in the studentís immediate possession while in school with proper documentation necessary. The inhaler use form is included in the student orientation package provided by the teacher.

Student Health History :

A student health history completed by the parent will be requested for each student upon initial enrollment. Parents will be asked to make an appointment with the health nurse and principal to discuss any specific or serious health condition.

THE PARENTS/GUARDIAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMING THE PRINCIPAL OR NURSE OF ANY CHANGE IN THE CHILDíS HEALTH STATUS OR CHANGE IN MEDICATION

Illness

If a child becomes ill at school, his/her temperature will be taken and the parent/guardian will be contacted if fever exists. For the safety of all students in the school, parents will be required to pick up any child who has an abnormal temperature. In case of an emergency, if the parent/ guardian cannot be reached, an ambulance will be called. We suggest that a parent who works outside of the home make special provision for someone to be called to take of the child in the event of illness while at school. A child should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

The school is not allowed to administer Tylenol or other medication that is not sent by the parent and with the proper documentation for administration. Parents must explain to children that the school is not indifferent to the studentsí occasional aches and pains, rather, the school must follow regulations.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

Agendas

The weekly/daily agenda provides a consistent means of documenting daily objectives, homework assignments, and communication between the home and school. Students in grades 2-6 will be issued agenda books free of charge. The replacement cost of the agenda book is $5.00.

Report Cards

Report cards are issued every nine weeks. The report card must be signed and returned to school in a timely manner.

Mid 9 Weeks Progress Reports

In an effort to keep parents better informed of their childrenís progress, as well as to increase parental involvement, Oak Grove will provide a mid 9 weeks progress report to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the school. If students are not making expected progress, parents are encouraged to schedule private conferences with teachers to try to solve the problem.

Grading Policy/Scale

This school believes that the issuance of grades is to promote continuous evaluation of student performance, to inform the student and parents of student progress, and to provide a basis for bringing about needed changes in student performance.

The basic grading system for subject area grades is expressed by a numerical value. The numerical values are equivalent to the following letter grades:

A - .94-100

B- .85-93

C- .76-84

D- .70-75

F (Failure).Below 70

Grades given at the end of each 9 week period will be determined from daily work, oral and written assignments, and tests. The teacher will weigh the value of grades for various assignments within the 9 weeks period computing the grade.

Academic Recognition

Each nine weeks, students will attend an awards ceremony. Students will receive recognition for academic success and good citizenship.

CONFERENCES WITH TEACHERS

Positive and consistent parental communication is encouraged between the home and school. The teaching staff will be pleased to meet with parents during scheduled non-instructional time at school. Each teacher will provide parents with his/her scheduled planning time each day. It is necessary for parents to call the office to schedule conferences with teachers at least one day in advance in order to avoid arriving and finding that the teacher has already been scheduled for a conference. For each child to benefit from efficient management of instructional time in the classroom, it is imperative that interruptions are not characteristic of our educational environment. Therefore, conferences may not take place during unscheduled instructional time or when teachers are responsible for supervising students.
