Cell Structure & Function
| 5.1.spi.1 | Identify basic structures of plant and animal cells. |
Cell Models - An interactive exhibit of plant and animal cells. |
| 5.1.spi.2 | Compare and contrast basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells. |
Quia Cell Activities - A number of activities involving cells. |
| 5.1.spi.3 | Distinguish between single cell and multicellular organisms. |
Interactions Between Living Things & Their Environments
| 5.2.spi.1 | Identify environmental changes caused by living things. |
Nowhere to Hide - In this activity, there are green and orange bugs (analogous to the moths in England) that live in green leafy trees. As in real life, birds eat these bugs—usually the ones they can see the best. Located close to the bugs is a factory that spews out pollution that turns the trees orange. This affects how well the birds can see the different colored bugs, thereby impacting the survival of the bugs. |
| 5.2.spi.2 | Determine various types of plant and animal relationships within an ecosystem. |
Biomes of the World - This unit from TeachersFirst is an online research project that includes introductory descriptions of the major biomes, along with web resources for further research and exploration. Students are asked to prepare a presentation on a specific biome. Good resources for teachers or students even if not used as set out in the unit plan. |
| 5.2.spi.3 | Predict the effects of human actions and/or natural disasters on the environment. |
Food Production and Energy for Life
| 5.3.spi.1 | Match plant structures with their functions. |
|
| 5.3.spi.2 | Identify photosynthesis as the food manufacturing process in plants. |
|
| 5.3.spi.3 | Identify what plants need (i.e. water, sunlight, carbon dioxide) to manufacture food. |
Heredity & Reproduction
| 5.4.spi.1 | Compare the traits of parents and their offspring. |
|
| 5.4.spi.2 | Infer the importance of reproduction in the survival of a species. |
|
| 5.4.spi.3 | Recognize the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis. |
Diversity and Adaptation Among Living Things
| 5.5.spi.1 | Compare how organisms adapt to different environments. | Adaptation & Competition - BBC review site - text and a few drawings cover how animals and plants adapt to their changing environment , extinction, and how humans affect environmental change. What's It Like Where You Live? - A great site from Missouri Botanical Garden that offers a wealth of information about six terrestrial biomes (rainforest, tundra, taiga, temperate deciduous forest, grassland, and desert) and six aquatic ecosystems (rivers and streams, ponds and lakes, wetlands, shorelines, temperate oceans, and tropical oceans). |
| 5.5.spi.2 | Match the form with the function of structures in living things. |
|
| 5.5.spi.3 | Identify characteristics that enhance the survival of organisms in an environment. |
|
| 5.5.spi.4 | Determine which organisms are likely to survive in a particular environment. |
Biological Change
| 6.6.spi.1 | Analyze how fossils provide information about the past. |
|
| 6.6.spi.2 | Identify factors that contribute to extinction. | |
| 6.6.spi.3 | Differentiate between the relative age of fossils in sedimentary rock. |
|
| 6.6.spi.4 | Select additional lines of scientific evidence, other than fossils, that illustrate change over time. |
| 6.7.spi.1 | Distinguish between a day, month, and year on earth based on the movements of the earth, sun, and moon. |
|
| 6.7.spi.2 | Identify the force that pulls objects toward the earth. | |
| 6.7.spi.3 | Differentiate between planets according to specific characteristics. | |
| 6.7.spi.4 | Categorize the components of the universe (i.e. stars, planets, comets, asteroids, meteors). |
|
| 6.7.spi.5 | Differentiate between a solar and a lunar eclipse. | |
| 6.7.spi.6 | Select the diagram that reflects the earth/sun relationship that accounts for the four seasons. | |
| 6.7.spi.7 | Predict the type of tide produced by the different positions of the earth and moon system. |
| 6.14.spi.1 | Predict the direction of heat flow between objects |
|
| 6.14.spi.2 | Identify the wavelength, frequency, and amplitude of a wave. |
|
| 6.14.spi.3 | Recognize a variety of energy transformations. |
|
| 6.14.spi.4 | Select examples of refraction, reflection, and absorption of light. |
|
| 6.14.spi.5 | Infer the impact of nuclear power on humans and the environment. |
